The log that gets filled in
A reading log earns its place when filling it takes less time than reading the next page: a date, a title, the minutes, and five little stars to color for how good the book was. The star rating is the trick — children who shrug at “write about your book” will argue passionately about whether it deserves four stars or five.
Switch to the with-summary style and each book gains one line — “what was it about?” — which is exactly the retelling practice teachers assign for weekly homework, without turning the log into an essay.
