Retelling, with the parts named
Ask a child what happened in a book and you often get the last thing they remember. A story map fixes that by naming the parts before they write: who was in it, where it happened, and then the three-beat spine of beginning, middle and end. Filling the boxes in order is the retelling skill itself.
It doubles as pre-writing — students planning their own story can fill the same boxes before drafting, which is usually the difference between a story that ends somewhere and one that stops. Print it after independent reading, as homework with a library book, or as the planning page for a writing unit.
