Jump the line before memorizing the rules
Integer arithmetic goes wrong when the sign rules get memorized before they make sense. The number line fixes that: start at the first number, jump the second, and ‒5 + 8 stops being a rule to recall and becomes a place you land. Every problem keeps its start and finish inside −10 to 10 so the whole jump fits on the printed line.
