Same-size pieces first

Adding fractions only makes sense once the pieces are the same size: two fifths plus one fifth is three fifths because you are counting identical parts. Like-denominator mode drills exactly that, and the two bar models beside each problem make it visible — shade two parts, shade one more, count what you have.

Unlike mode keeps one careful constraint: the second denominator is always a multiple of the first (halves and fourths, thirds and sixths), so renaming takes a single clean step instead of hunting a common denominator — the 4th-grade version of the skill. Sums stay under one whole and the key shows every answer already simplified.
