Tenths first, then hundredths
Decimal sense starts with the place-value grid: line the numbers up on the decimal point, add column by column, and the point in the answer lands by itself. The add mode draws that vertical layout with one dashed box per digit of the sum, so partial credit is visible — a child who gets the tenths right but forgets the carry shows exactly where the thinking slipped.
Compare mode pins both whole numbers equal on purpose: 3.4 versus 3.7 makes the decimal digits do the deciding, which is the actual skill — and in hundredths mode the classic trap pairs (0.4 versus 0.35) appear naturally. Switch between tenths and hundredths as confidence grows, and shuffle for a fresh sheet every time.
