Parts, wholes, and fact families

A number bond shows a whole split into two parts: 7 joins to 3 and 4. Filling the missing circle teaches that addition and subtraction are the same relationship seen from different sides — if 3 + 4 = 7, then 7 − 3 = 4. That’s the thinking behind fact families and mental math.

Three activities: missing part (the classic — the whole and one part are given), find the whole (add the parts), and mixed. The bonds of 10 mode drills every pair that makes ten — the single most useful set of facts a young mathematician can own. Steer every bond, lock the ones you like, and print a fresh sheet whenever.
