Where most word-problem trouble actually lives

One-step problems test arithmetic; two-step problems test reading. The hard part of “Maya buys 4 packs of 6 stickers, then gives 5 away” is not the multiplying or the subtracting — it is noticing that the question asks about what is left, not how many she bought. Every problem here needs both operations, and the work box has room to write them down instead of guessing.

Six original story frames rotate through money, sharing equally, rows and groups, and saving over time, with numbers chosen so every step lands on a whole, positive answer — no problem ever divides unevenly or dips below zero. The answer key writes out Step 1 and Step 2 separately, which is what makes it useful for marking: you can see exactly where a child went off.
