Two small words, one big word
Compound words are the first taste of morphology — the idea that big words are built from small ones a reader already knows. Each row shows two pictures; the child names them, sticks the words together, and writes the compound on the line. Every pair is chosen so both pictures read unambiguously: butter + fly, dog + house, egg + plant, wheel + chair.
Keep the word bank visible for 1st graders — it turns the task into matching and copying — or hide it so 2nd graders must build and spell each word themselves. Twenty curated pairs mean a shuffled sheet is different every time, and the answer key writes each compound in green on its line.
